Join Food & Literature Spring Break Trip to DC & NYC

Join the MSU English Department on a Spring Break Trip filled with literary indulgences, March 11-15, 2020 in Washington, D.C. and New York City.

This Spring Break Field Trip is part of English 2990, but it is available as a stand-alone experience for ALL MSU students. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to English majors. Informational Meeting

Through food and literature, we are able to learn about our own identities and cultures, and we are able to explore the identities and cultures of those not like ourselves. Food may be considered a necessity, and literature may be considered a luxury; however, the combination of the two can be viewed as a worthy indulgence. On this trip, we will look at the role of food in literature and explore the ways in which the two have influenced each other. In addition, we consider the ways that culture and identity have been shaped by food in narrative works.

We will be based in Washington, D.C. at the centrally located and student-centered HI Washington DC Hostel that includes WIFI, breakfast, kitchen, game room, and more. Excursions include:

• D.C. & NYC Restaurants, including BusBoys and Poets, Sweet Home Cafe, Mitsitam Cafe, & Seasoned Vegan (a vegan soul food restaurant in NYC!)
• The National Museum of African American History and Culture
• National Museum of the American Indian
• NYC’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
• Free Time to Explore Both DC & NYC
